Hon. Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo is a prominent Guyanese politician and economist who has significantly contributed to the development and progress of Guyana. Born on January 23, 1964, in Unity Village, Demerara-Mahaica, Guyana, Dr. Jagdeo has dedicated his career to public service and economic reform.


Dr. Jagdeo holds a degree in Economics from Patrice Lumumba Peoples' Friendship University in Moscow, where he also completed his postgraduate studies. His academic background laid a strong foundation for his role in shaping Guyana's economic policies.


He first entered the political scene as a member of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and quickly rose through the ranks due to his expertise and dedication. Dr. Jagdeo served as the Minister of Finance from 1995 to 1999, where he implemented pivotal financial reforms that stabilised the Guyanese economy.


In August 1999, he became the President of Guyana, a position he held until 2011. During his presidency, Dr. Jagdeo focused on economic diversification, poverty reduction, and environmental sustainability. He is particularly noted for his leadership in climate change advocacy, positioning Guyana as a global leader in forest conservation and environmental protection.


After his presidency, Dr. Jagdeo continued his public service, becoming the Vice President of Guyana in 2020 under President Irfaan Ali. In this role, he has continued to influence national policies, particularly in areas related to economic development and environmental sustainability.


Dr. Jagdeo has received numerous international accolades for his work, including the United Nations Champions of the Earth Award and the Pushkin Medal from Russia. His contributions to both national and global platforms underscore his commitment to progress and sustainable development.
