Group Chief Executive of Oando PLC
Speaker
Adewale Tinubu is the Group Chief Executive of Oando PLC, Africa’s leading indigenous energy solutions provider listed on the Nigerian Stock Exchange, and the first African company to have a cross-border inward listing on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.
In 1993, Mr. Tinubu co-founded Ocean & Oil Group and is widely recognized for guiding its strategic development from an oil trading and shipping company to a fully diversified, integrated Oil & Gas Company with interests in the Downstream, Midstream and Upstream. In 2000, Ocean and Oil acquired a controlling interest in Unipetrol PLC during the Federal Government of Nigeria’s privatization exercise and two years later, he led the largest-ever acquisition of a quoted Nigerian company, with Unipetrol PLC’s purchase of Agip Nig PLC. The group was rebranded as Oando PLC.
Under his tutelage, Oando built strong subsidiary brands and businesses, specifically in the midstream, Axxela Limited (formerly known as Oando Gas and Power) and in the downstream, the erstwhile OVH Energy (formerly known as Oando Marketing Limited), now the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited.
Axxela is the developer of Nigeria’s foremost natural gas distribution network and captive power solutions. The company pioneered the private sector piping and distribution of natural gas to industrial and commercial consumers, successfully reviving private sector participation in the gas distribution business in Nigeria.
OVH Energy (now NNPC) has the largest distribution footprint in Nigeria with over 1,500 trucks, 50 million liters in tank storage capacity and over 400 retail station outlets.
Under his leadership, the first privately owned mid-stream jetty in West Africa was conceived and developed to eliminate the operational constraints and inefficiencies in petroleum product importation into Nigeria.
In 2014, Mr. Tinubu led Oando Energy Resources (OER), the upstream subsidiary, through the $1.8 billion landmark acquisition of Conoco Phillips Nigerian businesses, fortifying the company as one of the largest indigenous independent oil & gas companies in Nigeria.
Through his leadership, Oando Clean Energy Limited was founded in 2021 to design, integrate and deliver low carbon emissions and renewable energy projects as well as develop infrastructure towards the realization of Africa’s energy requirements and the United Nations Race to Zero.
With a mission to bridge the educational gap in the country and build the next generation of leaders, Mr. Tinubu founded Oando Foundation in 2011. Oando Foundation is an independent charity with a primary focus on driving a sustainable basic educational system for the Nigerian child through its signature programme – The Adopt-A-School Initiative (AASI). Today, the Foundation has adopted ~ 88 public primary schools across Nigeria, supporting over 200,000 students, enrolled over 61,000 out-of-school children, trained 5,000+ teachers, infrastructure rehabilitation of adopted schools and established over 45 digital learning centers.
In recognition of his unwavering dedication to impacting the Nigerian energy sector, he was conferred a National Award as Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), in 2022, by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari. In 2023, he was awarded the ‘Private Sector Icon of the Year award in recognition of his service to the Nigerian private sector at the prestigious Vanguard Personality of the Year awards.
Through his leadership, Oando was bestowed as one of the 100 best companies to work in Nigeria by Jobberman, in 2019. In 2020, the company was also recognised by the Employer of Choice Awards as one of Top 100 African Brands and in 2022, earned the title of a Great place to work by the Great Place to Work Nigeria.
