Prime Minister of Barbados
Speaker
The Honourable Mia Amor Mottley, S.C., M.P., is a distinguished Barbadian stateswoman, attorney-at-law, and the eighth Prime Minister of Barbados. Born on October 1, 1965, in Barbados, she made history on May 25, 2018, when she became the first woman to serve as Prime Minister of the country. Her career has been marked by significant political milestones, regional leadership, and international advocacy for sustainable development, climate justice, and the interests of small island developing states.
Mottley was educated at Queen’s College in Barbados and the London School of Economics and Political Science, where she studied law. She qualified as a barrister and established herself in the legal profession before embarking on a distinguished career in public service.
Her political journey began in 1991 when she entered the Senate of Barbados as an Opposition Senator. In 1994, she was elected to the House of Assembly as the representative for St. Michael North East. Throughout her political career, she has served in several important government positions, including Minister of Education, Youth Affairs and Culture, Attorney General, Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Economic Affairs, and Deputy Prime Minister. She became Barbados' first female Attorney General and its youngest-ever Queen's Counsel.
In 2018, Mottley led the Barbados Labour Party to a historic general election victory, winning all 30 seats in the House of Assembly. Her party repeated this remarkable achievement in 2022 and again in 2026, securing three consecutive general election victories under her leadership.
One of the defining milestones of her premiership was Barbados' transition to a parliamentary republic on November 30, 2021. This historic constitutional change saw Barbados replace the British monarch as head of state with a Barbadian president, representing an important chapter in the nation's political development.
Beyond Barbados, Prime Minister Mottley has become an internationally prominent advocate for climate action, economic fairness, and greater opportunities for developing nations. Through the Bridgetown Initiative, she has championed reforms to the international financial system to improve access to financing and help vulnerable countries respond to climate change and economic challenges.
Her leadership has also extended throughout the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), where she has supported regional cooperation, economic integration, and the advancement of Caribbean interests in international affairs.
Mottley's contributions have earned significant international recognition. In 2021, she received the United Nations Environment Programme's Champions of the Earth award for Policy Leadership. In 2022, she was named among TIME magazine's 100 Most Influential People. Her honours also include the World Health Organization Director-General's Award for Global Health in 2024 and the Zayed Award for Human Fraternity and TIME Earth Award in 2025.
As Barbados' first female Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley has broken historic barriers and established a prominent place in Caribbean political history. Her achievements in public service, international diplomacy, and advocacy for climate and financial reform have made her an influential voice for Barbados, the Caribbean, and vulnerable nations around the world.
