The Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) is a semi-autonomous government agency established as a body corporate in 1997. It is governed by the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) Act 1997 (Act No. 31 of 1997), which has been amended over the years. The mission of the GEA is to ensure the provision of reliable energy in an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable manner for all in Guyana. The GEA, in fulfilling its mandate, has core functions that include advising and making recommendations to the Minister regarding any measures necessary to secure the efficient management of energy and the source of energy in the public interest. It also focuses on encouraging the development and utilization of renewable sources of energy nationwide.

Through the Government of Guyana, the GEA has supported the implementation of several renewable energy initiatives aimed at decoupling the country’s economic growth from using fossil fuels for electricity generation. These initiatives seek to harness Guyana’s abundant low-carbon resources, including solar energy and hydropower, through the Energy Matrix under the Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) 2030.   In addition to this, to achieve Guyana’s sustainable future, the GEA promotes efficient energy use, conservation practices, and renewable energy sources through policy formation, recommendations, and public awareness campaigns. The GEA is also responsible for granting and issuing licenses related to petroleum and petroleum products, including import, wholesale, and retail licenses. Additionally, the GEA manages the Fuel Marking Programme to identify legitimately imported petroleum and petroleum products.  The agency’s operations are managed by five divisions: the Energy and Energy Statistics Division, Legal and Licensing Division, Fuel Marking Division, Administration/Human Resource Division, and Finance Division.

The Guyana Energy Agency is located at 295 Quamina Street, South Cummingsburg, Georgetown, Guyana. The contact number for the Agency is +(592) 226-0394. For inquiries, email [email protected] or visit the website www.gea.gov.gy for more information.
